BCCA Raises Concerns about the Cancellation of the Resource Restoration Program

June 5, 2017 (Kamloops, BC) – The BC Cattlemen’s Association (BCCA) is concerned about the federal government’s recent decision to discontinue the Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Resource Restoration Programs in British Columbia and the Yukon.

The Resource Restoration Unit (RRU) has been part of approximately 1500 projects to enhance fish habitat along watercourses throughout British Columbia.  The projects have been very successful at bringing all the stakeholders to the table and completing much needed restoration work that have benefitted the entire ecosystem. BC ranchers have been part of these multiple stakeholder projects involving provincial and federal governments, First Nations, conservation organizations, recreationists and others.

“Cancellation of the Resource Restoration Unit is a major step backwards,” says Kevin Boon, General Manager for BCCA. “The Resource Restoration Unit has been an integral part of enabling all stakeholders to work together to preserve our rivers and streams for fish, wildlife, agriculture and society and we are concerned that the loss of the unit will mean the loss of meaningful collaboration on restoration. ”

“There is still on-the ground work to be done, especially with the high water we experienced in the southern part of the province this year, and we are asking the government to reinstate the Resource Restoration Unit,” says Boon. BCCA passed a resolution at their Annual General Meeting on May 26, 2017 that directed the Association to express our support for the program and to work towards the reinstating RRU.
